Mississippi Steamboat The City of Memphis, 1860 Messenger Bag
Posted By David Paul on at Dreamgifts
This Medium size Messenger bag features a reproduction of a vintage engraving of the Mississippi steamboat, The City of Memphis, published in 1860. The tinted color print shows the steamboat docked on the riverside beside a building with a ramp for access. The name of the steamboat is shown on the side below a sign which reads 'US Mail'.
Smoke billows from the two stacks and there are passengers on the foredeck. A cart laden with goods drawn by horse approaches the dock. The City of Memphis was built in 1857 and remained in service until an accident in 1866 when the boilers exploded with the loss of 11 lives.
Samuel L Clemens (better known as Mark Twain) served as a pilot on the The City of Memphis in the spring of 1860.
